Hi.

Welcome to Nature Underfoot. A blog that considers the smaller organisms that are intimately associated with human beings.  They are the winners of the Anthropocene, but they get little respect.  We're talking about nature that occupies the crack in the sidewalk, and climbs and oozes into our homes - nature underfoot.

Nature Underfoot - The Book

Nature Underfoot launched from Yale University Press on February 18! It is a book-length treatment of the themes discussed in the blog - the role that smaller organisms play in our lives and how we relate to them. We are in the midst of what many scientists refer to as the Sixth Great Extinction. Insects are an unfortunate example of the mass loss of organisms, both in terms of numbers and species. Researchers have cataloged losses of many different kinds of insects around the world - most recently fireflies. It seems like an important time to reconsider our relationship with tiny creatures. The goal is a growing human appreciation for plants, insects and their kin and instilling an approach to them that involves humility, empathy, and respect.

I hope you’ll check it out and share with others. Take a look here: https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300242782/nature-underfoot
